Outdoor Lighting Questions

Here are some of the questions we have been asked by customers over the years. If you can't find the answer to your question here, please give us a call. We'll make sure you get the right answer!

Are you a licensed contractor?

Absolutely. In addition, all of our team members are bonded and insured.

How long have you been in business?

Sky Valley Landscape has been in business in Tucson since 1997. Ted Essig, the owner, has been in the landscaping and landscape lighting industries since 1984.

Who are some of your customers?

Because we respect their privacy (and yours) we cannot give out names unless they give us specific permission. Still, we have served many individuals as well as homeowner associations in Green Valley and in northwest Tucson over these past 7 years.

How do you determine price?

Price is usually the last thing we determine simply because every home, every homeowner and every property is different. We can always give you an idea of what can be done for a particular budget, but most people want something unique and price, while reasonable, is not the major issue. Of course, you'll get a detailed plan with full costing down for every aspect when we design what you want. Suffice it to say you'll not only get your money's worth, you'll get a long lasting, unique and properly installed system you'll enjoy for years to come.

Can you install lighting into a yard that is already landscaped?

Definitely. Although the best time to design and install lighting is at the same time the landscaping goes in, many of our customers didn't put it in then or now they want to update their property with a dramatic new look for the nighttime as well as daytime. Either way, our design plan will include how to work around your existing landscaping or even improve some of your environment at the same time.

How long do bulbs last?

With our optimum installation for long life, most halogen lamps will last from 3,000 to 5,000 hours and more. We install the electrical supply system so the voltage is optimized for maximum lamp life.

What warrantys or guarantees do you have?

We have the best warranty in the business. The FX Luminaire products are unconditionally warranted for 10 full years. In the dry environment of Arizona, your installation should last much longer. One thing to note is that any exposed fixtures are at risk when placed near walkways. Of course, we'll always be available for any problem you may have in the future.

How long does it take to install a lighting system?

Total time for installation always depends on the complexity of the design. Covering ten to twenty thousand square feet of landscape with lots of lighting and mood areas will obviously take more time than highlighting a few saguaros in the front yard. We'll include an estimate of time required as part of our design package.

How/When do the lights turn on?

The use of photo cells and timers can be included so you never even have to touch a switch. However, most systems include manual switches for certain areas or needs. You'll be fully instructed on how everything works, such as making settings for timing changes, once installation is completed.

Will a dimmer control work on my landscape lighting?

Yes. Halogen and incandescent lamps can have varying light levels through the use of a dimmer switch. Even better, dimmers can extend lamp life and save energy.

What type of lights are used in ponds with fish?

Stainless steel, brass or composite fixtures are the only ones we would recommend. Copper fixtures should never be used underwater because they are harmful to the fish.

Why is the lens on my up light fixture white in color?

It's probably from a lime build up from water getting into the fixture from the irrigation system. All you have to do is clean the leans with shower cleaner to remove the lime.

Your Landscape Lighting

Professionally Done From Start to Finish Lighting is one element of your landscaping that is often done as an afterthought. In reality, proper lighting of any property is just as important as the landscaping itself. Gardens, pools, fountains and pathways become hauntingly beautiful sculptures when glowing with an inner light or traced against a darkened sky.
